To define Massachusetts downtowns algorithmically, we built a Downtown Job Mix Index (DJMI) that scores each census block on employment composition and density. Using LODES workplace data, we isolated downtown-compatible sectors—retail, finance, professional services, food service, public admin—while filtering out hospitals and warehouses that inflate job counts without downtown character. The DJMI formula combines downtown employment share with log-density to capture spatial concentration without over-weighting outliers.
This right-hand text block is set in the normal site font and sits beside the visual panel. Replace this copy with project narrative, methodology notes, or caption text that supports the media while maintaining the two-column structure.
This is a test paragraph for layout and typography. It sits between the large heading above and the body copy elsewhere on the page, so you can judge line length, rhythm, and how the centered block reads at this size before you replace it with real copy.
